“IF EASTER AND PENTECOST FALL ON ONE DAY”

The Dutch expression “If Easter and Pentecost fall on one day” has its origin in the fixed dates on which these Christian festivals are celebrated. On Easter Sunday we commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. Pentecost (Greek for 50) then falls again on the seventh Sunday after Easter. The expression therefore suggests that something will absolutely never happen, because the date of Pentecost is dependent on the date of Easter Sunday, and it is therefore impossible for Easter and Pentecost to fall on the same day.

Within the Christian faith, Easter is celebrated to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, while Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and other believers, marking the beginning of the Christian church.

The expression is a lively part of the language and is used to emphasize the improbability of an event. In other languages a similar expression occurs, such as in German: “Wenn Ostern und Pfingsten auf einen Tag fallen”.

The following week (7 – 13 April 2024) I am going to focus my devotions with the proverb as the theme, but with a small difference: What if Easter and Pentecost fall on the same day?
