MAUNDY THURSDAY
Scripture reading “He took water in a wash basin and began to wash the feet of the student followers and dry them with the towel he had with him.” John 13 verse 5

On Thursday, we commemorate the special moment when Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. This act of humility and service is not only an example of Jesus’ love for his followers, but also a harbinger of his coming sacrifice on the cross. As Jesus stands up during the meal, the removal of his outer garment symbolizes his willingness to lay down his life for humanity. By taking the apron of a slave and washing the feet of his disciples, it shows the boundlessness of his love and his willingness to perform even the humblest of tasks.
People considered washing feet a gesture of courtesy and hospitality, but it was also associated with death and impurity. Jews avoided washing their own feet to avoid coming into contact with the dust of the earth, which symbolized the transience of life and the impurity of death. Jews often left this task to pagan slaves, as they already considered them unclean. But it was precisely this task that Jesus took on voluntarily, out of love for his people and as a sign of his solidarity with those who were considered impure outcasts.
When Jesus calls his followers to follow his example, it goes beyond mere service to others. It also means willingness to suffer and even die for the principles of the Kingdom of God. Jesus’ followers later faced persecution, torture, and even death because of their faith. Peter, who initially resisted, eventually died the same death as Jesus. He literally gave his life to spread the Gospel.

On this Maundy Thursday, let us not only remember the humility and love of Jesus, but let us also follow his example in our willingness to serve and give our lives for the Kingdom of God. May this moment of reflection lead us to a deeper understanding of Jesus’ sacrifice and inspire us to share his love and grace with others.
Prayer: Father, we thank You for the loving example that Jesus gave us through His humble service. He, the Savior of the world, did not hesitate to perform the work of a slave, to wash our feet and show us the magnanimity of your kingdom. We pray that You may cleanse our hearts of all pride and arrogance, and that we may understand the true meaning of servitude. Teach us not only to receive but also to give, and to serve our brothers and sisters humbly in love and humility. AMEN
