Joseph is known to us as the dream interpreter at the court of Pharaoh after he interpreted the dreams of the king’s servants, the winemaker and the baker. He warns the baker that he will soon be executed, while the wine pourer receives a positive result of living longer. These predictions come exactly as Joseph interpreted them, which strengthens his credibility as a prophet of dreams. In contemporary literature, theology and art forms, the story of Joseph is often used as a metaphor for the relationship between dreams and Divine revelation. Joseph’s gift is presented as a form of Divine inspiration that enables him to unlock the secrets of the human soul and reveal the will of God. The story of Joseph’s dream interpretation reminds us that God often speaks through unexpected channels to make His will known to us. It can come through dreams, visions, or through the wisdom of other people. I think we need to learn to be open to the different ways in which God communicates with us, and to trust in his guidance and insight in all aspects of our lives.
- Nebuchadnezzar: The Dream of a King
The Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babel, had a nightmare or frightening dream that caused him great discomfort. The dream showed a large image, composed of different materials, and a rock pushing against the image and destroying it. The king was confused and sought help to understand the meaning of the dream. With God’s help, Daniel was able to interpret the king’s dream. He told the king that the image represented the successive kingdoms that would come after him, and that eventually God’s kingdom would come that would destroy and conquer all earthly kingdoms. The interpretation of Daniel was accurate and filled the king with awe and reverence for God. The message of Daniel’s ability to interpret dreams is one of trust in God’s sovereignty over history and the future. It reminds us that God not only knows the future, but also has control over it. The dreams and visions given by God serve as a reminder that He is actively involved in the world and carrying out His plans.
- Paul: The Vision of an Apostle
Paul’s meeting with a Macedonian man in Troas, as told in Acts 16:9, is a striking example of how God communicates with his servants through dreams. This event takes place during Paul’s second missionary journey. He finds himself in Tróas, a city located in present-day Turkey. In Troas, Paul receives a vision or dream of a man who asks him to come to Macedonia. This dream is a special revelation from God that changes Paul’s direction and mission. The man in the dream, who is recognized as a Macedonian man, serves as a call for Paul to bring the Gospel to Greece. The meaning of this dream is clear to Paul: God has a specific commission for him to go to Macedonia and preach the Gospel. Understanding the dream, Paul obeys and leaves for Greece to continue his missionary work. The story of Paul’s dream reminds us of the reality of God’s guidance in our lives. This shows us that God is still actively involved in our calling and mission, and that He often uses dreams and visions to make His will known to us.

How do we see today whether a dream are: a complicated psychological process or a message from God or both? In our modern society there are still testimonies of dreams and visions that lead people to a firmer or more intense faith and a better understanding of their life purpose. It is important not to ignore dreams, but to test them against the truth of God’s Word and to seek confirmation through prayer and discernment. Dreams can lead us to self-examination, spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with God. It is a reminder that God still communicates with us through various channels, including dreams and visions.
