Friday, 6 December 2024: How Communities Can Help Combat Gender-Based Violence (2)

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a widespread problem affecting individuals globally, with women and girls often bearing the brunt of it. While government policies and laws create the framework to combat GBV, lasting change begins within communities. Community initiatives have the power to shift cultural norms, provide direct support to survivors, and create safe environments. Below, we discuss practical ways communities can contribute effectively.
Engage Men and Boys
Addressing GBV is not solely a women’s issue; it is essential to engage men and boys to foster lasting change.
Gender Sensitization Programs: Organize workshops and discussions to involve men and boys in conversations about healthy masculinity, respect, and gender equality. These programs help dismantle harmful stereotypes and encourage men to become allies in the fight against GBV.
Positive Male Role Models: Promote men who actively advocate against GBV and exhibit respectful behaviour. These role models can inspire others to challenge harmful attitudes and behaviour within their communities.
