Wednesday, 4 December 2024: Prevalence of Violence Against Women in South Africa

The level of violence against women and girls in South Africa is alarmingly high and remains one of the country’s most pressing human rights challenges. Official statistics show that:

One in five women in relationships has experienced physical violence by a partner.

Many more women suffer other forms of violence, including sexual violence, emotional abuse, and economic oppression, often perpetrated by men they know or strangers.

A significant barrier to understanding the true extent of violence is the underreporting of cases. Many women do not report abuse due to fear of stigma, retaliation, or a lack of trust in the system. Cultural and social norms often discourage survivors from seeking help, perpetuating a cycle of silence.

Inadequate Policing and Training

Victims often feel that police officers are not adequately trained to handle gender-based violence (GBV) cases. Reports indicate that some officers are dismissive or insensitive, leading survivors to believe that their complaints will not be taken seriously.

This underscores the urgent need for systemic change to address GBV effectively and support survivors in breaking the silence.
