GANGSTER VIOLENCE: MONDAY 22 JULY 2014

Gang violence is a heart-wrenching reality that tears our communities apart and steals the future of our youth. This violence is perpetrated by organized groups that foster a sense of unity and are often territorially bound. They create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, engaging their members in activities aimed at furthering the gang’s objectives, both individually and collectively. Our text from Deuteronomy 7:21 reminds us not to be afraid or terrified, for the Lord our God is a great and awesome God who is with us. This scripture assures us that, despite the chaos and violence, God has not abandoned us, and His power is greater than any form of evil we face.

Gangs often emerge in impoverished areas, communities that are socially disorganized and marked by inadequate social institutions, where residents are economically disadvantaged. These communities frequently experience high levels of school dropouts, teenage pregnancies, public health issues, and drug sales within their borders. It is in these broken environments that our young people feel they have no other way out and turn to gangs for identity, family, and protection. Yet, in the face of such despair, the Lord calls us to be His light and love, to bring hope where there is only darkness.

We have the tremendous task of reminding our youth that they are not lost and that they are not alone. We must actively work to protect and empower them, inviting them to become part of God’s family where unconditional love and acceptance can be found. May we be encouraged knowing that the Lord we serve is great and awesome, and that He is with us in every battle against gang violence. May we always be His instruments of peace and restoration, and may we never cease to pray and work for our communities.

PRAYER  Lord, be present wherever children grow up believing that gangs provide them with identity, family, a sense of belonging, protection, and power. They find themselves in a dangerous world that robs them of their childhood and leaves scars that are difficult to heal. Bless those called to work with gang members, sharing Your unconditional love with both words and actions. Protect and empower them as they invite these lost sons and daughters to become part of Your family. AMEN
