19 MARCH 2025 – SELF-GLORIFICATION /NARCISSISM

WEDNESDAY 19/3/2025 THE GRANDIOSE NATURE OF NARCISSISM

2 Timothy 3 verses 1 to 5 “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.”

Narcissists project an image of absolute confidence and success. They wear a mask of grandiosity to convince others of their exceptional worth. But behind this façade lies a fragile self-image and a fear of exposure. They build a world around themselves where they are the heroes, while others exist only to serve their agenda.

In 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Paul describes a time when people will be arrogant, self-centred, and obsessed with their own importance. This is a perfect description of narcissists who put their own interests above everything else. Like the Pharisees who condemned Jesus, they have a form of godliness but lack true righteousness. They seek praise and recognition from people rather than walking humbly with God.

Narcissists exude an aura of invincibility and confidence, but it is merely a façade. However, behind this curtain, they are small, insecure individuals desperately seeking validation and power. These types of people are often the loudest voices in meetings, those who excessively display their titles and achievements, and the ones who insist that their way is always the best. They build their lives on external appearances and use manipulation to maintain their position. But in the end, this grandiosity leads to deep emptiness. They constantly need new admirers to maintain their false image.

The Bible teaches us that true greatness is not found in self-glorification but in humility. Jesus, the Son of God, came to serve, not to be served (Mark 10:45). He washed His disciples’ feet and gave His life for others. This is the complete opposite of the narcissist, who uses everything for personal gain.

Two Lessons

  1. True self-worth comes from God, not external appearances. A person’s character and relationship with God are more important than worldly status and recognition.
  2. Humility is more powerful than grandiosity. Jesus showed that true greatness is found in service and love, not in self-glorification and manipulation.

PRAYER: Lord, You have taught us that true greatness does not lie in our own power and influence but in humility and love. Help me not to be consumed by the pursuit of recognition but to find my identity in You. Protect my heart from pride and the desire for self-glorification. Help me to resist the temptation to impress others for my own gain and instead to glorify You in all things. Make me aware of the influence of narcissism in my life and guide me in building true, sincere relationships. I choose to have a servant’s heart, as Jesus showed us. Lead me to walk in Your truth and surrender my pride to You. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN
