GANGS: RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS
THE SIGNS
Many parents and concerned adults fail to recognize the signs of a child’s involvement in a local gang. Signs such as rebelliousness, tattoos, staying out late with “friends” you’ve never met, secretive or deceitful behavior, and clashes with the law can indicate possible gang involvement. Other clues include dilated or small pupils from drug use, hurried speech from crystal meth or speed use, yellow fingers from holding marijuana joints, and clothing or accessories that bear gang insignias or national flags such as American or British symbols on belts or clothing. Additionally, clothing worn in odd ways (such as rolling up one pant leg) and the use of secret hand signs with one another are strong indicators of gang affiliation.

The Importance of Vigilance
While these are some of the signs of gang activity, they can also indicate youth rebellion or drug experimentation without gang involvement. As parents and concerned adults, it is crucial to distinguish between typical adolescent behavior and more serious signs of gang involvement. To do this, it is important to remain vigilant and notice any changes in behavior or appearance. By understanding the nuances, we can help identify whether a child is merely experimenting or is truly at risk of gang involvement.
Take Action
How do we, as concerned adults, know for sure if a child is involved in gang activity? The best advice is to talk about it—with other kids, social workers, guidance counselors, and, most importantly, our own children. Open and honest communication is essential. Simply asking the child if he or she is involved in gang activity can sometimes provide clarity. However, it is equally important to verify their answer by checking with others who might have insight into the child’s behavior and social circles.

Summary
By staying informed and maintaining open communication, parents and adults can better understand and address the signs of gang involvement. Early intervention is key to preventing deeper involvement in gang activities and helping young people find safer, healthier paths. It takes a community to protect our youth, so do not hesitate to seek support and guidance when needed.
