GANG VIOLENCE DEVOTIONS: TUESDAY, JULY 23, 2024
PROVERBS 1:8-19: “My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. If they say, ‘Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us ambush the innocent without reason; let us swallow them alive like Sheol.'”
Despite the apparent increase in gang activity, communities of faith still have a unique opportunity to curb this influence by engaging with young people and offering them positive alternatives. We must not lose heart. This mission requires us to adopt and implement new and creative ways to reach the youth, moving towards them where they are instead of expecting them to come to us. It is essential that we develop methods without changing our core values. The Apostle Paul spoke of becoming all things to all people to save some, and we must embody this approach in our efforts to reach young people involved in gangs. By being wise like Paul and gentle like doves, we can help them discover their true purpose and lead them away from the path of destruction.
As we strive to bring light into the dark world of gangs and drugs, we must support and bless those who work within these communities. These individuals are the sowers of hope, engaging with at-risk youth, breaking the chains that enslave so many, and offering a vision of a better future. Youth work is challenging and often dangerous, but it is vital for the transformation of our communities. We must pray for their safety and the success of their efforts, trusting that the seeds they plant will, in due time, through the power of the Holy Spirit, bear much fruit.
PRAYER Dear Lord, we seek Your guidance and strength as we strive to neutralize the influence of gangs in our communities. We pray for the wisdom to reach young people where they are, to offer them love, support, and a positive path forward. Bless those who tirelessly work in these challenging environments, protect them, and give them the strength to continue their essential work. May their efforts be fruitful, bringing light into the darkness and helping young people discover their true purpose in life. Fill our hearts with compassion and determination, and let Your Spirit water the seeds of hope we plant, so that they may grow and yield an abundant harvest of peace and transformation. In Jesus’ name, we pray. AMEN
