Devotional: LENT 40 days – 40th
Scripture reading: “By their fruits you will know them. Does one get grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?” MATTHEW 7:16

Lent provides an opportunity for Christians to reflect on their role in the political arena, especially in South Africa. We must remember that all Christians are involved in politics, even when they do not realize it. Even if you don’t vote and you pay taxes or VAT or you drive through a ‘pothole’ and scold, it’s politics. We believe in a God who passionately cares about His world and His creation, and therefore God cares about how South Africa is run. The Bible is extremely political because it is about how God wants people to behave towards Him and towards each other. This involves economics, service delivery and courts because these instruments must be used to build justice.

In South Africa we often see injustice that grieves God’s heart. As believers in God, we have a lot to offer politics. We cannot be passive (bystanders); we must make our voices heard and use our influence to advance justice and prosperity. We can make a difference in the political arena by embodying and promoting our Christian values and principles.
Prayer: Lord, we pray that we as Christians will understand and appreciate our role in politics, especially in a time of elections. May we strive for justice and peace in our country, and may we act in accordance with Your will and Your love. Give us wisdom and guidance to make the right choices and to make a positive difference in society. Amen.
Reflection questions:
- In what ways can Christians become actively involved in the political process?
- How can we promote our Christian values and principles in the political arena?
- What are our responsibilities as Christians in protecting justice and peace in our society?
