LENT 40 day –  38th

Scripture reading: “By their fruits you will know them. Does one get grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?” MATTHEW 7:16

Let us consider Lent as an opportunity to remind God’s children in South Africa of their identity amid the excitement of an election year in our beautiful country. While we will be involved and rightly so in the political process, we must remember that we cannot put aside our Christian vocation. We are called to act in accordance with the gospel, even while participating in political affairs. This means that we must distinguish ourselves from the world, not only by the truth we preach, but also by the way we preach it. We’re not going to vote for thorns and thistles on purpose, are we? Our testimony must bear witness to our Christian identity, regardless of the circumstances. Our voices must bear witness to our Christian identity, to our care for the poor, to light instead of darkness.

Even when we engage in political debates, we remain the people of God, therefore we do not vote for scoffers, liars and exploiters…..

Prayer: Lord God, It is our prayer that, in the midst of political darkness and lies, we will remember who we are in Christ. May our testimony of Your sons hope and love distinguish us in everything we do. Give us the strength to live meekness and reverence, even in political debates and cross decisions. May our walk be worthy of the gospel, regardless of the challenges we may encounter. Amen.

Reflection questions:

1. How can we maintain our Christian identity in the midst of political struggle?

2. In what way can we demonstrate gentleness and respect in political conversations and actions?

3. How can we maintain our calling to preach the gospel in the midst of political involvement?
