DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA

STATISTICS

The statistics on violence against women and children in South Africa in 2023 are extremely worrying. In a span of just three months, 285 children and 1,135 women were killed, while 18,474 women and 2,281 children were violently assaulted. The Netherlands where I live now had 48 murders of women for the year. These numbers reflect a sad and dangerous reality for women and children in South Africa.

The killing of women in South Africa is a serious problem. An average of 4 women are murdered per day, which is extremely high and indicates that women in the country are not safe. This figure is a clear indication of the extent of gender-based violence and the urgency with which the matter must be addressed. For comparison, 0.4 women are murdered for every 100,000 women in the Netherlands, while 9.0 women are murdered for every 100,000 women in South Africa. Poland with 1.4 has the highest figure in Europe.

Violent Assault of Women There is also a shockingly high number of violent assaults on women. On average, 66 women are violently assaulted per day. This violence can be physical, emotional, or sexual and has serious implications for the victims’ mental and physical health. The fact that children are also victims of this violence is particularly worrying. The killing of 285 children in three months is heartbreaking and represents a serious failure in the protection of youth. The 2,281 violent assaults of children within the same period underline the cruel reality that many children in South Africa have to deal with.

Consequences The consequences of this violence are far-reaching and affect not only the victims and their families, but also society as a whole. This can lead to trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, poor mental health, and an increased risk for future violence.
