FRIDAY 14 FEBRUARY 2025 – INFLUENTIAL SUPERRICH PEOPLE AND POWER-HUNGRY LEADERS

ESTHER 4

In Esther 4, we read about Mordecai’s act of courage in the face of great danger. He refuses to bow to Haman, even though it is a royal command. This act puts Haman, the influential, super rich and powerful second-in-command of the kingdom, against him. Haman’s pride and obsession with power lead him to an evil plan to annihilate the entire Jewish people. This story warns us of the dangers of unchecked power and highlights the courage needed to stand up against injustice.

Haman could not tolerate Mordecai’s refusal to bow, and this seemingly small act of disobedience quickly escalates into a genocide plan against the Jewish people. Haman is an example of how power and influence, when not governed by integrity, can lead to great injustice.

In our time, the super-rich and influential people often use their power to pursue their own interests. Think of large corporations (oil, IT, weapons, pharmaceuticals…) and political figures who use powerful media platforms to drive their own agendas and protect themselves. The consequences often affect ordinary people, who first believe their lies and vote for them, only to feel powerless later—just like the Jews threatened by Haman’s decree.

Mordecai’s response is remarkable. Instead of remaining silent or defending himself, he clothes himself in sackcloth and ashes and calls upon God. His actions symbolize deep dependence on God and serve as a call for change. The image of “sitting in sackcloth and ashes” invites us to examine our own lives and world. How do we respond when confronted with injustice? Do we remain silent, or do we take courageous steps like Mordecai?

Jesus also warned about the dangers of wealth and power when not handled responsibly. In Luke 12:15, He says: “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” Power and wealth can be used for great good, but when misused, they can lead to corruption and destruction.

The story of Esther 4 reminds us of the dangers of uncontrolled power and the courage required to stand up for justice. Haman’s power led to his downfall, while Mordecai’s faith and courage brought salvation to his people. Always trust in God’s justice.

Tips

  1. Stand up for justice: Be courageous like Mordecai when confronted with injustice.
  2. Use your influence with integrity: If God blesses you with power or wealth, use it to help others and promote justice.

PRAYER Lord, You are the God of justice. Grant us the courage to stand up against injustice and the wisdom to use our influence with integrity. Help us never to be blinded by power, but always to seek Your will. Thank You for guiding and protecting us. AMEN
