Contemplation: LENT 40 days –39th

Scripture reading: “By their fruits you will know them. Does one get grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?” MATTHEW 7:16

If we find ourselves in an election year in South Africa, it is essential for Christians to first stop and reflect. Reflect on the responsibility that comes with citizenship. We are not mere spectators in this democratic process; rather we are trustees entrusted with the privilege of shaping the future of our nation. God has given all South African Christians the privilege to vote, please do so with the aim of being an agent of change. Your voice can bring change…give light to break the spiral of darkness…eradicate poverty…your voice can make gangs lose their power!! DO YOU BELIEVE IT!!

Jeremiah 29:7 reminds us of our duty to pursue the prosperity of our country, our city, our people. This means getting actively involved in the political process: advocating for justice, fairness, honesty and the general prosperity of all people. Our citizenship is not to be taken lightly; it is a platform by which we can uphold Christ-honoring values and contribute to the flourishing of society.

While we have to make the difficult choice, which party is worthy of our vote, let us do so with judgment and wisdom. Let us seek guidance from God to make informed decisions, guidance to make our choices with biblical principles. The Beatitudes of Jesus are important to check whether parties’ manifestos correspond to His principles. May we use our voice to promote fairness and honesty and pursue the well-being of all citizens, thus reflecting the love and compassion of Christ in all we do.

Prayer:

Gracious God, as we enter this election, we seek Your wisdom and guidance. Help us to manage our citizenship with integrity and purpose, So that we can honor You in all our actions and decisions. Endow us with discernment to understand the complexities of politics. And may Your will and guidance heal our beloved South Africa. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.

Reflection questions:

  1. How can we actively manage our citizenship in a way that honors Christ during this election?
  2. What biblical principles should guide our decision-making process as we get involved in political life?
  3. In what ways can we advocate for justice and fairness in our society through our participation in elections?
