CLIMATE CHANGE DEVOTIONS: MONDAY 15 JULY 2024
PSALM 8:2-3: “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants, you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.”
The wonder of creation surrounds us every day, from the majestic mountains to the smallest flowers. Psalm 8 reminds us of the greatness of God, who created everything, and whose name should be celebrated across the entire earth. It calls us to treat creation in such a way that God’s glory remains clearly visible on earth. When we look at nature with respect and reverence, we acknowledge God’s handiwork and His greatness. We have a responsibility to preserve and cherish this beautiful creation so that the world can see who God is and what He has done.
The focus of Psalm 8 on both the heavens and the earth underscores that God’s magnificence is not only visible in the celestial bodies but also in His care for humanity. It is striking how this Psalm highlights the fact that God has given humans the task to rule over His creation. This means that we have a role to play in the maintenance and care of the world around us. God has entrusted us with this responsibility, and we must take it seriously. Our actions should always aim to reflect His glory on earth.
What also makes this Psalm so special is the mention of children and infants praising God’s work. This points to the hope and future that God has for the earth. Each new generation is proof of God’s continuous care and provision. We have the responsibility to leave behind an earth where future generations can flourish and sing God’s praises. Let us therefore treat creation in such a way that in every aspect of our lives, we make God’s glory visible to the world around us.
PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, We come before You with grateful hearts for the beautiful creation You have entrusted to us. Help us to see and sing the wonder of Your handiwork every day, like children and infants who praise Your mighty works. Give us the wisdom and dedication to care for the earth so that Your glory remains visible in all that we do. Father, we realize that You have given us the great responsibility to rule over Your creation. Grant us the strength and the will to approach this task with seriousness and respect. May our actions always reflect our reverence for You and our desire to showcase Your greatness to the world. We pray for the next generations, that they too will have the joy and privilege of living in a beautiful world and praising Your name. Give us the wisdom to make decisions today that will ensure the future of our planet. May Your glory be visible through all our deeds on earth, now and forever. In Jesus’ name, we pray. AMEN
