MONDAY, 2 DECEMBER 2024 – DAY 8: REASONS GIVEN FOR FEMICIDE

Femicide arises from a combination of social, cultural, and institutional factors that reinforce deeply rooted gender inequalities. It reflects the systemic nature of violence against women and girls and is driven by several so-called causes:

Cultural Norms and Beliefs

Patriarchal (male-dominated) cultural beliefs that place men above women are among the most dominant drivers of femicide. In such communities, women are often viewed as subordinate to men or as their property. These beliefs sometimes make violence, including murder, seem “acceptable” to protect so-called “family or community honour.”

Power Inequalities

The unequal distribution of power between men and women plays a key role in exacerbating violence. Men use control and dominance as a way to maintain their power, which can escalate to extreme violence, such as femicide, when they feel their control is being threatened.

Harmful Stereotypes

Gender stereotypes, such as expectations that women should be obedient, quiet, and supportive, increase the risk of violence. When women try to break out of these roles, it can lead to violent punishments by men who feel their power or status is being challenged.

Institutional Failures

A lack of effective laws, weak law enforcement, and insufficient resources for victims contribute to a culture of impunity. When men believe they are unlikely to be held accountable for their actions, violence is further perpetuated.

Economic Inequalities

Financial dependence places women in vulnerable positions, often trapping them in abusive or dangerous relationships. This dependence is frequently exploited by men to exert control, which in some cases escalates to femicide.

By understanding these unhealthy and unlawful root causes, effective strategies can be developed to combat violence and promote the safety and rights of women and girls.
